Tento přehled vznikl setříděním anket významných redaktorů, publicistů, odborníků i hudebních kritiků a vychází z následujících zdrojů:

1. Anketa redaktorů a splupracovníků New Musical Expressu z roku 1974 o nejlepších 100 alb rockové historie
2. Kniha Criticˇs Choice Top 200 Albums z roku 1978
3. Anketa 32 publicistů z okruhu New Musical Expressu z listopadu roku 1985 o nejlepší stovku
4. Anketa odborníků z nizozemského rozhlasu z roku 1987
5. Anketa publicistů z okruhu časopisu The Rolling Stone 1987
6. Nejlepších 100 alb ve vesmíru podle prestižního britského měsíčníku Q z roku 1998
7. Kniha 500 nejlepších alb všech dob dle časopisu The Rolling Stone, které bylo vybráno nestrannou porotou v roce 2003

V anketách (1 až 7) se objevilo celkem 743 alb soudobé hudby. Je zde zachyceno období zahrnující hudbu Roberta Johnsona z roku 1936, která byla vydána až po třiceti letech a končí rockovou hudbou 21. století. K těmto anketám se sluší uvést, že podobné číslování je ošidné, jelikož je velmi subjektivní a navíc ovlivněno dobou. Některá alba však již prověřil čas a přesto se objevují ve všech anketách. Při tomto setřídění se pak ocitají na předních místech. Pravidla pro setřídění byla dána předem a toto je výsledek.

Poněkud podivné hodnocení soudobé hudby (8), rozšířilo tento přehled o dalších 263 alb. Na 40. pozici tohoto přehledu kleslo z 24. místa album Music For The Big Pink skupiny The Band. Tím, že se v této anketě NME nedostalo mezi vyvolených 500 alb, dosahuje největšího sešupu z dosud hodnocených 743 titulů. Za deset let od ankety časopisu The Rollimg Stone se albu Chucka Berryho The Great Twenty - Eight nepodařilo z 21. pozice probojovat mezi tuto pětistovku. Tím se stává tento titul největším flopem desetiletí. Absentují také John Lee Hooker a Muddy Waters. Jako by hudba těch, kteří okupují přední pozice nestáli na ramenou těchto velikánů. Zato se třeba dostalo na N. Sinatrovou a L. Hazelwooda. Potěšilo mne však, že se v anketě objevilo např. album Marianne Faithfull Broken English vydané v roce 1979. Zvítězilo album skupiny The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead. Před deseti lety skončil tento titul na 241. místě. Tehdy zvítězil Sergeant Pepper´s a ten si v této anketě pohoršil a umístnil se až na 87. místě.
